Is October a good time to visit the Amalfi Coast?
October is a beautiful, underrated month. Afternoons still reach about 23.5 °C and nights are mild, around 16 °C. The light turns golden, the towns are quieter than in summer and walking is comfortable again on the paths between the villages. Rain becomes more frequent, on about 10 days in an average October, often in short, heavy bursts with clear days in between, so keep the plan flexible. The sun sets around 18:21 in mid-October, and Italian summer time ends on the last Sunday of the month, moving sunset an hour earlier. Most hotels and restaurants stay open through the month, while some seasonal businesses close at the end of it. For swimming, walking and food with fewer people around, October is a very good choice.
Can you swim on the Amalfi Coast in October?
Yes, often more comfortably than people expect. The sea keeps its summer warmth well into autumn: around 22.5 °C on average in recent years (2021–2025), and 22 °C over 1991–2020, pleasant on a sunny day. Beach clubs close at the end of September, but the free sea access next to the property is still there for a swim from the rocks. Choose calm days: autumn storms can make the sea rough for a day or two.
How do you get around the coast in October?
From 1 October Travelmar runs its autumn and winter timetable between Salerno, Vietri sul Mare, Amalfi and Positano; sailings depend on the sea, so check the departures for your date. The taxi boat to the cove stops at the end of September: from October guests reach the coast road up the approximately 200 steps, where the SITA bus stops in both directions, towards Vietri and towards Amalfi. Regional trains from Vietri’s station run to Salerno, for Paestum, and towards Naples, stopping at Pompei.
