Is January a good time to visit the Amalfi Coast?
January suits travellers who want the coast as the people who live here know it: quiet lanes, bakeries and cafés for locals, and views without a crowd. Days are short, with the sun rising around 07:22 and setting around 16:58, and afternoons reach about 13.5 °C, mild for the season when the sun is out. Nights drop to around 7.5 °C. Rain is the main variable, on about 12 days in an average January, so plan indoor alternatives: the ceramics workshops of Vietri sul Mare, the cathedral and museums of Salerno, and the archaeological parks of Pompeii and Paestum, which stay open all year. Many seasonal hotels, restaurants and boat services close in winter, so check opening days before you plan a specific lunch or visit. For a calm, inexpensive and unhurried winter break, January works; for beach life it does not.
Can you swim on the Amalfi Coast in January?
Only if you enjoy cold-water swimming. Satellite data puts the sea around 16 °C in January in recent years (2021–2025) and 15 °C as the 1991–2020 average, which is cold for most people. Beach clubs are closed and there is no service on the beaches, though the free sea access next to the property is always there for a winter dip on a calm, sunny day. The sea is often at its most dramatic in winter: storms from the south-west send long swells into the bay, and on clear days after the rain the views across the Gulf of Salerno are sharp all the way to the Cilento coast.
How do you get around the coast in January?
Winter is the season of the bus. SITA buses run along the coastal road all year, and from Marina d’Albori the stop at the top of the approximately 200 steps is served in both directions, towards Vietri and Salerno and towards Amalfi. Travelmar ferries run all year between Salerno, Vietri sul Mare, Amalfi and Positano, but sailings are the first thing to stop in rough seas: check the departures on the day. Regional trains from Vietri’s station run to Salerno and towards Naples, stopping at Pompei, and are the most reliable way to the archaeological sites. The taxi boat to the cove does not run until June.
