Is July a good time to visit the Amalfi Coast?
July is high summer: reliably dry, with rain on only about 5 days in an average month, and hot, with afternoons around 31.5 °C and nights around 22 °C. It is the month for sea, shade and long evenings: the sun sets around 20:31 in mid-July and dinner outdoors is the rule. Plan the day around the heat. Walk and visit towns early in the morning, spend the middle of the day by the water or indoors, and go out again in the evening when the coast comes alive. The most famous towns are busy, especially Amalfi and Positano, and traffic on the coastal road is slow at weekends, which makes the ferry and the bus the easier way to move. Book accommodation, boats and restaurants you care about well ahead.
Can you swim on the Amalfi Coast in July?
Yes, and the water is warm: around 27 °C on average in recent years (2021–2025), and 25 °C over 1991–2020. Beach clubs are open, with paid sunbeds and umbrellas that are worth booking at weekends, and the free sea access next to the property needs no booking. Swim early or late to avoid the strongest sun, use reef-safe high-SPF sunscreen and keep water shoes for the pebbles and rocks. On calm days the sea at the cove is clear and still, especially in the morning.
How do you get around the coast in July?
In summer the sea is the best road. The taxi boat links Marina di Vietri with the cove, on request, paid and sea permitting, and the ferry pier is a short walk away; Travelmar ferries connect Vietri sul Mare with Cetara, Maiori, Minori, Amalfi and Positano. Check the departures for your date and plan the return in time. SITA buses still stop at the top of the approximately 200 steps in both directions, and regional trains from Vietri reach Salerno and Pompei. Driving and parking along the coast are slow and limited in July.
