How to choose your month

Start with the two things that would make the trip worthwhile: long days in the sea, walks between the villages, a particular visit, or simply quiet. A swimming holiday points to the summer months, from June to October; a walking holiday to spring and autumn, when the paths are green and the heat is gentle. If a boat trip matters, check the operator’s dates before you book anything else, and keep a plan B for rough seas in every season.

What changes with the seasons

From June to September the day at Marina d’Albori can start by boat: the taxi boat from Marina di Vietri, on request, paid and sea permitting. Beach clubs open from May to September. Ferries and SITA buses run all year; ferry timetables change on 1 April and 1 October, and sailings always depend on the sea. Outside the season many hotels and restaurants close for a few months, while buses, trains and the archaeological parks of Pompeii and Paestum stay open.

Busy and quiet months

July and August are the main holiday months, with the weeks around Ferragosto, on 15 August, the busiest of the year; Easter and spring holiday weekends are busy too. Quieter does not mean everything is open: in winter, check the services and businesses you rely on. A good travel window is one that fits your priorities and your tolerance for uncertainty.
