Is August a good time to visit the Amalfi Coast?

August is the warmest month, with afternoons around 32 °C and nights around 23 °C, and the sea at its warmest too. It is also the month when Italy is on holiday: the weeks around Ferragosto, the national holiday on 15 August, are the busiest of the year in the towns, on the beaches and on the roads. If you come in August, choose a slow rhythm. Swim in the morning, rest in the shade at midday, and go out in the evening, when the sun sets around 19:59 and the villages fill with people walking and eating outside. Rain is rare, on about 5 days in an average August, though late-summer storms can arrive towards the end of the month. Book everything that matters to you early, from accommodation to boat trips and dinners.

Can you swim on the Amalfi Coast in August?

Yes, in the warmest water of the year: around 27 °C on average in recent years (2021–2025), and 26 °C over 1991–2020. Beach clubs are open and busy, so book sunbeds ahead, especially for the Ferragosto weekend. The free sea access next to the property needs no booking. Early morning swims are the quietest, and water shoes help on the pebbles and rocks typical of the coast.

How do you get around the coast in August?

Leave the car. The coastal road is at its slowest in August and parking in the towns is scarce. The taxi boat links Marina di Vietri with the cove, on request, paid and sea permitting, a short walk from the ferry pier; Travelmar ferries connect Vietri sul Mare with Amalfi, Positano and the villages in between. Boats and buses are full around Ferragosto, so allow extra time and check the departures for your date. SITA buses stop at the top of the approximately 200 steps in both directions, and regional trains from Vietri run to Salerno and Pompei.
